Childhood Obesity is Everyone's Problem
The United States is experiencing an epidemic of obesity. Two thirds of American adults are either overweight or obese -- and the epidemic also affects children. Today, one third of all children ages 2-19 are overweight or obese. Most of these children will become diabetic. Even now, the costs of obesity are staggering -- 112,000 Americans die each year due to obesity-related diseases, and care for obesity-induced conditions costs $150 billion each year. ABC News reports: “The generation of children born in 2000 will likely live shorter life spans than their parents. Economic productivity of this generation will probably be less than their parents as well. Indeed, an obese adult adds $1,400 excess health care costs annually compared with his or her non-obese peers.â€

Obesity linked to lower risk of glaucoma in women
A recent study found that heavier women were less likely to get one type of glaucoma than their thinner peers - the first time this association has been shown, the authors report. The finding doesn’t mean that anyone at risk for the disease should try to pack on the pounds, they say, but it could be a first step towards learning more about why people develop glaucoma and how it progresses. Glaucoma is a degenerative eye condition that occurs when there is damage to the optic nerve - fibers that run between the eye and the brain. According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, more than 4 million Americans, mostly older adults, have glaucoma. Common treatments for glaucoma include medicated eye drops and other drugs as well as surgery.

Young Journalists: Obesity soars — Oliver to the rescue
There’s an epidemic sweeping our nation that I feel many people try to avoid, ignore, or just complain about and not act upon. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination survey, one in every three Americans is obese. In the United States in 2008, Washington had an obesity rate of 25.4 percent, not too far behind the highest, in West Virginia, with 31 percent, according to the CDC. Cowlitz County topped the chart for most obese county in Washington with a rate of 36 percent in 2007 according to the Washington DOH. I am constantly hearing in the media how obesity is not the person’s fault, that it’s a disease. But the way I see it, it is a disease that, with hard work and devotion, can be overcome.
