90-year-old has donated 25 gallons of blood

Margaret Delfino may be a 90-year-old great-grandmother, but that doesn't stop her from hauling out the big guns when it comes to blood donations. Including her most recent donation last Thursday, Delfino's total is now 25 gallons, about 20 times the amount of blood in the average human body.

A surgical team performs a minimally invasive mitral valve replacement at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle. Blood lost by the patient during surgery is held in the cell-saver reservoir below. Instead of being discarded, the blood will be cleaned and returned to the patient. This practice of conserving the patient's own blood and minimizing transfusions reduces infection and illness and improves recovery.

'Normal' Blood Pressure in Male Teens a Warning Sign
Teen boys with normal blood pressure levels are three to four times more likely to develop high blood pressure in early adulthood than their female counterparts, a new study shows. Researchers came to this conclusion after studying the blood pressure of 23,191 males and 3,789 females from an average age of 17 until 42. The participants were part of a long-term study conducted by the Israeli Defense Forces.
