Radiation for Childhood Cancer Can Boost Risk of Stillbirth Later
Women who are childhood cancer survivors face a greater risk of having a stillborn child if their uterus or ovaries were exposed to radiation during their treatments, a new study finds. Although neither boys nor girls who survived childhood cancer appear to suffer genetic damage that might affect their offspring, radiation damage to the uterus makes it as much as 12 times more likely that infants will be stillborn or die shortly after birth, the researchers said.

Targeted Radiation for Early Breast Cancer a Good Option: Study
Radiation therapy that targets a specific area of the breast is as effective as whole-breast radiation in reducing breast cancer recurrence in some women and is far more convenient, a new study suggests. Researchers led by Jayant S. Vaidya of University College London, and David Joseph of the University of Western Australia, examined the medical records of almost 1,000 breast cancer patients who received (targeted) intraoperative radiotherapy and a nearly equal number who underwent whole-breast external beam radiation.

Overuse of CT scans will lead to new cancer deaths, a study shows
Each year that today's scanners are used, 14,500 deaths could result, researchers say. When healthy people are exposed to the radiation, the imaging may create more problems than it solves. Widespread overuse of CT scans and variations in radiation doses caused by different machines -- operated by technicians following an array of procedures -- are subjecting patients to high radiation doses that will ultimately lead to tens of thousands of new cancer cases and deaths, researchers reported Tuesday. .
