Controlling actions of FSH may help treat osteoporosis in menopausal women
Diminished bone density is common among menopausal women and raises
their risk of osteoporosis, bone fractures and subsequent
complications. Research has traditionally focused on therapies that
seek to maintain the level of estrogen in the body. This hormone
seems to sustain bone health, but it drops to an extremely low
level during and after menopause.
Serotonin for Weight Loss
Earlier this month, we discussed how serotonin is important for
keeping away wintertime blues (or anytime blues). If you missed
that, check out the post with diet tips to help you maintain a good
mood: Serotonin Diet for Winter Blues. The topic of serotonin is
especially important during the winter as many people suffer from
seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Over at Healthbolt, Marijke is
documenting her own personal experiment with using light treatment
for SAD: One Week into the S.A.D. Light Experiment. Today, I have a
guest article for you from the authors of The Serotonin Power Diet.

Prior Fractures Could Raise Older Women's Odds for Osteoporosis
Older women who suffered bone fractures earlier in life may be at
higher risk for osteoporosis today, a new study suggests. When
these women develop osteoporosis, their loss in health-related
quality of life becomes similar to that experienced by people with
arthritis, lung disease, diabetes, and other chronic diseases, said
the international team of researchers.
New Pill Found to Cut Weight With Few Side Effects: Study
A weight-loss pill called lorcaserin not only helps people drop
pounds but does so with few side effects, new industry-funded
research reports. A potential player in fighting the obesity
epidemic, lorcaserin is a new type of weight-loss drug that works
by acting on serotonin, a chemical associated with feelings of
well-being and feeling full, and does not appear to increase blood
pressure or cause any other heart problems, according to the
researchers, whose work was sponsored by the drug manufacturer.
Certain Antidepressants May Cause Lactation Difficulties
A new study which will be published in The Endocrine Society's
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM) shows
that women taking particular antidepressants may
experience delayed lactation after giving birth and may need extra
help to achieve their breastfeeding goals. Nelson Horseman, PhD, of
the University of Cincinnati and co-author of the study states,"The
breasts are serotonin-regulated glands, meaning the breasts'
ability to secrete milk at the right time is closely related to the
body's production and regulation of the hormone serotonin.
 Common antidepressant drugs like fluoxetine,
sertraline and paroxetine are known as selective serotonin reuptake
inhibitor (SSRI) drugs and while they can affect mood, emotion and
sleep they may also impact serotonin regulation i...
