Correcting blocked arteries in patients who may have a heart attack
Do you need coronary angioplasty? Nonsurgical treatment opens clogged arteries, but there are risks. The key to saving a heart attack victim's life is to resume the flow of oxygen-rich blood through the patient's heart by opening coronary arteries blocked by plaque. Coronary angioplasty offers a nonsurgical method of opening the arteries and restoring the blood flow. However, not all blockages can be treated with angioplasty. Some require coronary artery bypass surgery.

Regular teeth brushing linked to healthier hearts
People who don’t brush their teeth twice a day have an increased risk of heart disease, scientists said on Friday, adding scientific weight to 19th century theories about oral health and chronic disease. British researchers studied nearly 12,000 adults in Scotland and found those with poor oral hygiene had a 70 percent extra risk of heart disease compared with those who brushed twice a day and who were less likely to have unhealthy gums. People with gum disease are more likely to develop heart disease and diabetes because inflammation in the body, including in the mouth and gums, plays a role in the build up of clogged arteries, said Richard Watt from University College London, who led the study.

Diet and Exercise Beat Drugs for Diabetes Heart Risks
More than 1 in 10 American adults have diabetes. But the multibillion-dollar blockbuster drugs marketed as treatment for diabetes haven't proved to be so successful against the biggest cause of death related to it: heart disease. Four new studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine are a stark warning to diabetics who rely on drugs to lower their risk of heart attacks and strokes. One found that using antihypertensives to lower systolic blood does nothing to lower risk of heart complications; another found no benefit to adding a drug to raise HDL ("good") cholesterol. And no heart benefits were associated with two drugs given to lower high blood sugar levels. Evidence is accumulating that diabetics may not benefit -- and may even be worse off -- when they're treated with a nu...

WARNING: Ignore This Simple Daily Habit at Your Own Risk
People who fail to brush their teeth twice a day may be putting themselves at risk of heart disease. A study of more than 11,000 adults backs previous research linking gum disease with heart problems. More work is needed to confirm whether poor oral health directly causes heart disease or is a marker of risk. BBC News reports: "It is known that inflammation in the body, including in the mouth and gums, has an important role in the build up of clogged arteries, which can lead to a heart attack. But this is the first time that researchers have looked at whether the frequency of teeth brushing has any bearing on the risk of developing heart disease."
