30 million women to benefit from health reform law
Thirty million women will benefit from the new health reform law over the next decade, either through new or strengthened insurance coverage, according to a new report from The Commonwealth Fund. In the first analysis of its kind, the authors report that the law will stabilize and reverse the growing exposure to health costs that women now experience by subsidizing health insurance for up to 15 million currently uninsured women, and strengthening existing coverage for 14.5 million women who are considered underinsured - those who have health coverage that does not adequately protect them from high medical expenses. Provisions important to women will expand eligibility for Medicaid; provide subsidies to purchase insurance; limit out-of-pocket spending; prevent insurers from charging higher ...

Child Health Insurance Rates Rising
From the "What did you think would happen?" division of the land of Obamington comes this report from The Hill. The rule barring insurance plans from turning away sick children or denying coverage for specific illnesses for children who are already covered was one of the most popular parts of the new law. Medical Tourism Insurance
According to this recent article, the insurance broker Lockton Singapore has launched an insurance product to cover the cost of medical complications for medical travellers receiving surgery abroad. The underwriter is QBE, the Australian general and reinsurance provider. The article notes that residents from most countries around the world travelling to accredited hospitals are eligible for the policy. The policy only covers treatment in just over 300 hospitals accredited by JCI. JCI is an international accreditation body.Note however,Eligibility includes most countries - but not the US. None of the 300 accredited hospitals are in the USA.I suspect the reason is the high cost of medical care in the US - and the underwriter is not willing to bear that cost. This strategy will keep down the pr...

Politics Split States On High-Risk Health Coverage
By Christopher Weaver Among the first deadlines for states under the new federal health law came and went Friday, and the results show plenty of political baggage is still in tow. Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, a Republican for now, felt for middle ground on the federal government's offer to help his state to participate in a project that will help insure sick people with preexisting conditions. Even as he demurred from the invitation, he promised the Obama administration, "We stand ready to assist you." Florida Gov. Charlie Crist wants Washington to run the state's high-risk pool. (Joe Raedle/Getty Images) Endangered in the wild, axolotls are thriving in labs. () --> Crist, of course, is in the middle-ground business right now. Last week, he announced he would leave the...
