New rheumatoid arthritis criteria to stave off disabling disease for thousands of people
New criteria for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), published in the Annals
of Rheumatic Diseases, could prevent thousands of people from
developing disabling late stage disease, by redefining how RA
should be classified. Rheumatoid arthritis is a progressive
autoimmune inflammatory disease, primarily of the joints. If
untreated, it leads to damage of bone and cartilage, joint
deformities and disability. Around 350,000 people in the UK are

New way of classifying rheumatoid arthritis aimed at identifying the disease earlier
The American College of Rheumatology today announced the release of
revised classification criteria (created in collaboration with the
European League Against Rheumatism) for rheumatoid arthritis, which
will allow the study of treatments for RA at much earlier stages of

Reducing Rheumatoid Arthritis Among Women
Between 1995 and 2007 the incidence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
increased among American women and slightly decreased among men.
Year by year the incidence of rheumatoid arthritis among women
appears to be increasing. Since RA is a disease caused by
chronic inflammation it is thought that perhaps inflammation is
increasing among women. A recent study, published in the journal
Arthritis and Rheumatism, reports that the number of diagnosed RA
cases rose 2.5 percent between 1995 and 2007, and now affect just
over 53 women per 100,000, and nearly 28 men per 100,000.
