Brown Rice Bests White for Diabetes Prevention
Substituting brown rice or another whole grain for white rice can
help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, new research suggests.
Five or more servings of white rice a week increased the risk of
type 2 diabetes by 17 percent, according to the study, which is
published in the June 14 issue of the Archives of Internal
Medicine. But replacing white rice with brown rice could reduce the
risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 16 percent, the study found.
Medicare Advantage Plans Earn So-So Quality Grades

An analysis by the consulting firm Avalere Health finds less than a
fourth of the roughly 11 million people enrolled in Medicare
Advantage plans as of this spring belonged to plans that had earned
four- or five-star quality ratings from Medicare officials. Those
grades -- which have come under fire from the health insurance
industry group -- measure everything from how quickly health plans
answer customer calls to how well they provide preventive care. Of

Tools that assess bias in standardized tests flawed
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Overturning more than 40 years of accepted
practice, new research proves that the tools used to check tests of
"general mental ability" for bias are themselves flawed. This key
finding from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business
challenges reliance on such exams to make objective decisions for
employment or academic admissions even in the face of
well-documented gaps between mean scores of white and minority

The Hidden Link to Black-White Disparities in Bad Birth Outcomes
In the United States, there are disparities in rates of pregnancy
problems among women of different skin colors. One previously
unexplored possible influence on the disparity in adverse birth
outcomes is maternal vitamin D status. A new review looked at the
evidence relating maternal vitamin D to preeclampsia, spontaneous
preterm birth, gestational diabetes, and fetal growth restriction.

for vitamin D in the pathophysiology of these poor pregnancy
